Roof Access

Due to the access being at a height and exposed to the elements, the design needed to allow safer navigation of the roof space, and the access points needed good gripping underfoot.

What NES Built

Northern Engineering Services built Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust a bespoke staircase system that was CAD designed, certified and approved by a structural engineer and to NHS safety requirements.

To remedy the slip hazard, the team manufactured perforated steel steps. These are fabricated to be non-slip, as each hole within the perforated steel has been punched specifically to meet that requirement.

Technical Specifications

  • 128 workshop hours to complete
  • 50x50 box section
  • Angle cut to suit the gradient of the roofs
  • 1000s of machine-punched holes
  • Up and over design
  • Powder coated black
  • Mild steel
  • All metal welded together, except for the centre piece
  • Step system craned into place where the centre piece was attached

Conclusion

Wigan Infirmary Hospital's main building now has these access points and steps installed on its roof, allowing better access across the full site.

This allows for safer movement across the premises' roof, keeping their staff and contractors as safe as possible.
