Mid-Support Beam
AIS Vanguard needed a way to stop the crossbeam on their tower cranes from sagging and becoming damaged when testing on the ground.

The job in numbers
The Mid-Support Beam
Due to the weight of the crossbeam and the distance between the two outer touch points, the middle of the beam is prone to sagging and therefore damage, which leads to costly repairs and replacements.
What NES Built
Northern Engineering Services and AIS Vanguard agreed on a mid-support beam that could be positioned along the crossbeam to create an extra touch point for when the crane crossbeam is laid at rest.
This support beam is fully adjustable, meaning it can be placed on all surfaces and still provide the support needed, and help the client avoid costly future damage to the crane.
Technical Specifications
- 250kg of welding
- 100mm diameter kingpin that needed to be knocked in place by hand
- Over 200 working hours just in the workshop to complete this job
- All material supplied by us (mild steel, universal beams, plate steel, box-section)
- Fabrication, machining, welding, design, transported and painted
- The customer supplied an image, from there NES created the technical drawings and specifications for how it would all work together
- 4.5 tonne overall weight, the top beam was a tonne in weight on its own
- Before the mid-support went to the customer we tested the product, including weight loaded tests up to 250 tonne
- Due to the size of the project, all work had to be done in the yard of our workshop rather than in the workshop itself
Conclusion
Whilst currently in Scotland, this mid-support beam will follow the tower crane from site to site, predominately used when the customer is installing wind turbines.
The mid-support beam will reduce AIS Vanguard's ongoing maintenance and replacement costs.
